The best videogame from that era. Period. And I think the author misses a bit of the game's appeal. It is not "more simple" than other games of it's time. It is more instinctual or, if you will, primal. You, the family, baddies and a gun. Oh, and it's not "fundamentally limited" it is "innately focused" :)
And the 360 pad had a more than passing resemblance, down to the colors, of the Dreamcast controller. As for motion controllers, if you want to get technical, the first motion controlled joystick was the Le Stick for the Atari VCS, released in 1981 (http://classicgames.about.com/od/consoleandhandheldgames/p/LeStickProfil...).
As for boomerang designs, they go back to the original NES, the PS1, and others.
Microsoft is fantastic at copying, they very RARELY ever innovate. What bothers most people in the industry is when they scream about their innovative spirit. It is laughable.
