Sony is to launch an online content distribution service for its network-connected devices in 2010.
Executive VP and PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai told reporters that the service will offer movies, music, books and other content to the company’s TVs, Blu-ray players, ebooks and other devices.
Hirai also told reporters he’s confident Sony will hit its target of 13 million PS3 unit sales in the business year ending March 2010, according to Reuters.
Yesterday Sony said that it is targeting a return to profitability for its PlayStation business in the fiscal year ending March 2011.
The company plans to release a series of 3D-related products for the home during its 2010 financial year, including the launch of 3D gaming on PS3. The platform holder also confirmed that it is exploring the possibility of introducing a PlayStation Network subscription model. While online gaming on PS3 is expected to remain free, unspecified premium PSN services could be charged for.
I think these are all the right strategies. Question is whether they can implement them. These ideas have been rolling around Sony for the last ten years but FINALLY we are seeing some progress i.e. the PlayStation Video Store and also introduction of third party services such as VidZone and iPlayer.
I am pretty excited about this 3D thing. The fact that is can be delivered through a firmware is gob-smacking. It will be like a new generation has arrived. The books thing could be interesting...the PS3 Cell can do some nice visualization tricks and I can see some nice and interactive reading possibilities. I know they are also thinking of releasing digital comics. If they can get a music store on there it would be awesome. Anyway I am pretty happy with this; as long as everything is synced on one account and you can use content on multiple Sony devices (i.e. the PSP and PS3 - which you can right now actually) and there is some reward system (i.e. the more you buy the more points you get - or a subscription system) I am in.
