Sony Computer Entertainment America is expanding its Latin American business by officially launching the PS2 in the emerging Brazilian market this month.
The console will retail for R$799 ($445), while software prices will range from R$99 ($55) - R$119 ($66). Over 14 games will be available at launch, including Gran Turismo 4 and God Of War II.
PS2 has sold over 140 million units globally since debuting in 2000, making it the most popular console to date.
“The launch highlights SCEA’s commitment to expand the PlayStation business in Latin America and marks the beginning of a two-phase operation to roll out PlayStation products and services to consumers across Brazil”, Sony said in a statement. “Brazil is home to a large community of gaming enthusiasts, making the country an ideal opportunity for SCEA to introduce the PlayStation experience to a new legion of fans.”
Brazil also saw the launch of the comparatively cheap, download-only Zeebo console in June this year.
Fuck that's disgusting. Jesus christ Sony that's just horribly overpriced, I hope Zeebo takes this launch to school and teaches Sony a lesson about doing cunty things like this.
Is it really any surprise they end up pirating when they get game a decade later at a silly price?
Totally, its ridiculous ain't it.
I know launching the console over there won't exactly be free but still that is crazy moneys.
Also is it just a generic picture being used or are Brazil getting the behemoth PS2 rather than the slim?
I'm pretty sure there are alot of Brazilians who just important, the U.S is only up the road
Are Sony going to give them a cinematic release of spiderman as well? $70 a ticket?
Are those prices accurate and what currency is the dollar in....
Wow! I never knew it wasn't out there officially! I saw quite a few when I was in Argentina and Chile last year and occasionally a 360 for sale at astronomical prices, but those prices for the PS2 seem rediculous. I bet piracy is rife with those prices.
Are tariffs that bad or something?
