Wii and 360 face largest declines in unit sales compared to October 2008 in the US, with overall unit sales down 20 per cent.
803,000 Wiis were sold in October 2008, but only 507,000 sold in the same month last year, while 360 sales dropped from 371,000 to 249,700. DS sales held the most steady, year-on-year, at 458,000 sales compared to last October's 491,000.
But due to higher unit prices for DS and PSP, sales revenues for the handhelds have increased in the year to date, even though unit sales have decreased. Overall, though, in the year to date, unit sales have decreased 10 per cent on those of the same period last year, even despite price cuts, which have not provided lasting sales momentum.
Compared to last month, which comprised five weeks rather than October's four, Wii, DS and PSP sales increased on the basis of average sales per week, while PS3 and 360 declined.
Looks like the PS3's sales increase lasted shorter than even I had expected. It only managed to beat out the 360 by 70k just one month after a hardware revamp and 100 dollar price drop. It'll be interesting to see how the holiday months play out.
I agree; although I expected the PS3 to not even out-sell the 360 even after the price cut in the US such were the numbers before (a lot of others did too). Anyway 70k is still a strong figure and it will be interesting to see the numbers going forward. I am pretty sure the recession is having an effect here as well; the consoles are generally down so if we factor that the economy was better the PS3 would be selling a lot more and create a greater distance gap between the 360 and PS3. It is tough to say; it could be people are opting for $200 options in this recession. Anyway I still think the PS3 can outsell the 360 over the coming months (6 months to 31st March 2010) by about 3 million units. And then after that the PS3 library starts to get pretty strong and the Wand will be released.
I agree on the March 2010 statement you made. Great post bro.
You two need to get on Live if you want to suck off each other
LOL! Wow! Quite funny actually. See you around to toadwarrior...
No problems mate. Looks like me and you will be commenting from now on; on various articles and news on this site. Hey you need to hold me on that figure also, lol, I want to see how my predictions turn out.
Yeah I used to post here more often but a certain few users ruined the experience for me (and a handful of others).
I personally think the PS3 sales drop/redesign will boost the PS3, then it'll have strong holiday months going into February then tax season will drag the boost out a little further. I think the true test of where the PS3 is at will come when we see March's and April's NPD numbers next year. If they can hold their month-to-month lead over the 360 past March it'll be scary for MS.
Also, I'm not too convinced the PS3 will outsell the 360 during the holidays. It'll be the first time ever if so.
Nintendo Wii - 506,900
Nintendo DS - 457,600
PlayStation 3 - 320,600
Xbox 360 - 249,700
PlayStation Portable - 174,600
PlayStation 2 - 117,800
is there a reason no numbers are given for the PS3 and the PSP?
