Dublin, Ireland's Jolt Online Gaming has recanted a previous announcement that the upcoming revival of the classic gaming series Zork will be an MMO.
"I've been reading a lot of speculation about what kind of a game this will be and I really want to set expectations correctly," wrote Dylan Collins, CEO of Jolt in a development update. "[Legends of Zork] is a casual adventure game. We've designed it to be the kind of game that sneaks into your soul and steals about 20 minutes of your time."
He adds, "It's not an MMO (collective sigh of relief, I'd imagine)."
Jolt and Activision Publishing announced the browser-based Legends of Zork in January this year. "Designed to provide gamers with a casual MMO game they can play on their laptop, desktop or Apple iPhone (in school, work or on the bus), there’s nothing to download," a Legends of Zork press statement said at the time.
Currently, Jolt is seeking more beta testers as the game is in the "final stages" of development.
"We genuinely think it's a worthy addition to the Zork universe, but at the same time we know that some of you won't agree. You'll have the opportunity to try it out very soon though," said Collins.
The first game in the Zork series, Zork I: The Great Underground Empire, arrived in 1979 for computers. Many of the games in the series were text-based adventure games with vividly detailed scenarios. The original Zork trilogy was followed by numerous other Zork titles.
Why the hell are they calling it an MMO if it's "not an MMO"? When are they going to tell us what they're doing exactly?
I like the idea of a game I can sign into from anywhere and diddle around in. Maybe it's sort of like Dungeons and Dragons: Tiny Adventures on Facebook. I hope it has a little more staying power than that one, though.
If playing with others enhances the gameplay but playing solo never detracts, then it's all good for me.
