A leaked document appearing to contain confidential notes from an August 5 meeting between Sega and Sony Computer Entertainment America may have revealed a release date for the platform holder’s motion sensing controller, as well as plans to launch a PS2 emulator for PS3.

As of press time, the document was downloadable from what seemed to be a Sega Of America FTP site, althought the link no longer works The meeting notes indicate that Sony intends to begin selling its new motion sensing controller in March in Japan and that the company hopes to sell “4-5MM units WW”.

The document states that Sony wants to introduce a PS2 emulator for PS3, enabling it to sell all “all PS2 titles on PSN”, and that it “could put Japanese games directly on the PlayStation Network for download in a special Japanese Import section (pricing $9.99 to $39.99 for full game)”.

Elsewhere, it says that Sony would be interested in introducing a range of Dreamcast titles to the PSN: “If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively. If we give them a long period of exclusivity they’ll give us more marketing support.”

Sony wouldn't comment on this report when contacted, while Sega has yet to reply to our request for comment.

The document in question is reprinted in its entirety below:

SCEA Meeting Aug 5th Notes
Aug 6 2009 – DRAFT FOR COMMENTS

Objectives of Meeting
 Dyer agreed to regular quarterly meetings with SOA

Sony PS3
 SCEA reiterated plans to sell 13 million PS3s this year
 Big announcement back half of year they can’t talk about (potentially price cut of PS3 to reach hardware goals)
 SCEA commented on indexing between PS3 and 360 SKUs, should be around 2:1 to garner most favorable treatment.

Motion Controller
 Spring 2010 launch (March in JP)
 No bundle/pricing details yet, should come Sept 1
 Plan on selling 4-5MM units WW
 SCEA agreed to provide a list of Sega IP that would work well with the motion controller, Virtua Tennis was an example
 Motion Controller support allows easy way to differentiate PS3 SKU
 Other differentiation opportunities include PSP/PS3 interoperability – think of features that would make users want to buy both PS3 and PSP SKUs.

Alpha Protocol
 Michael Foster, product evaluator, said AP felt barely RPG. Initial level too challenging for players. “Mass Effect felt more RPG.”
 Review notes sent to John Merlino a few weeks prior. After meeting Gerald mentioned AP is a high priority for his team.

Planet 51
 Sell in of PS3 SKU – SCEA noted that other movie titles on PS3 had underperformed as well (inc. Transformers) this cycle.
 Dyer suggests contacting Susan at Walmart and asking what she wants in the pack to sell this SKU (movie tix etc)
 Other possibilities are Hybrid movie disc (BD 25 or 50 with Game and Movie on same disc).

Bayonetta
 Collectors edition with Bayonetta Action Figure
 Novo recommended launching PSN demo around Xmas based off a Jan 5th Ship date with 2-3 week run out to launch.
 3-4 weeks is usually ideal demo timing with fresh content every week leading up to launch (trailers, insider video about PG heritage, video blogs).

Vancouver 2010
 HOME, Olympic destination would garner a lot of positive attention from SCEA
 Should be doing same with Bayonetta, Marvel etc. Easy to launch in all territories.
 HOME merchandizing opportunities (clothes etc).

Sonic Racing
 Open to DLC to differentiate PS3 SKU – not ratchet and clank but other characters
o maybe characters from Rare or Fable universes

Yakuza
 Could put Japanese games directly on PSN for download in a special Japanese Import section (pricing $9.99 to $39.99 for full game).
 Might need to localize menus at least with subtitles.
 SCEA interested in helping on MKTG side if they can have period of exclusivity.

AVP
 Another great HOME candidate
 AVP avatars
 Hybrid BD disc with movie

Iron Man 2
 Great candidate for HOME space – explore Tony Stark’s lab etc.
 Should have one for Marvel in general.

PSU2
 Could do bundle at GameStop with PSP 30-35K units on UMD, Go, or both.

Valkyria 1937
 Could bundle with PSP as well.

Vanquish and Aliens: CM
 Opportunity for PS3/PSP interoperability (see Eidos Batman, Army of Two, Assassin’s Creed for good examples).
 If we offer that SCEA would be really interested in having us at their booth next E3.

Thor
SCEA would like a look at the code soon.

Sonic Anniversary
 Could put out collectors edition with all old sonic games on one BD disc.
 “Best of Sonic” for around $99.
 SCEA would love PSN exclusive power ups/different game modes (like Castlevania’s flip it over/backwards)

PS2 emulator for PS3 (confidential)
 SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc)
 For co Marketing money show PS3 controller on TV ads – similar to EA Madden Spots, NCAA, etc…

London Olympics
 Perfect opportunity for Motion Controller integration.

DC Digital Titles
 If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively.
 If we give them a long period of exclusivity they’ll give us more marketing support.

PSP Titles
 For SKU differentiation it’s best to offer features that are slightly different from PS3 version.
 Titles that are coming up on PSP are Assassin’s Creed II, GTA China Wars, Resident Evil, Little Big Planet – all massive franchises.
 SCEA has a specific PSP deck which they can send up with their hardware director for a chat.

Thanks, Neogaf

I don't have a PS3 (or 360 for that matter), but it would be nice to download all those classic PS2 titles if and when i get round to buying the PS3.

I imagine the emulation will be for both downloadable games and disc based ones. I have an original bc PS3, but the emulator is still a little dodgy at rendering some games. ICO looks pretty bad compared to when I play it on my PS2 and the cut-scenes in FF10/12 look much worse. Apart from that though it's pretty much the same, and I actually prefer using the PS3 to play PS2 games because of the digital memory cards and my ability to back up my system every now and again.

If they start supporting the PS3 emulator again hopefully they'll iron out the little bugs still remaining. Seeing as you can get PS2 game's looking wonderful on a fairly standard PC a first party produced PS2 emulator should look great with enough work put into it.

Having a Japanese import section would be great also, however basic subtitles and menu localistion should be necessary. I'm not talking perfect translation, just simple subtitling so you can understand what's going on would be fine. Having a small team work on quality translations would go down great with the niche market interested in Japanese imports and Sony would garner a lot of points with Japanese developers and the gaming community, whether or not you were into the imports it would make you feel Sony really cared about giving it's consoles games the audience they deserve.

being a 60gb PS3 owner, i feel pretty indifferent about the emulation. but a Japanese Import secion and (especially) Dreamcast games are major aces in my opinion.

Mancubus's picture

Funny enough I feel the same was as with most of the PSone-Classics. I've had good times with them, but I don't wanna just play them again. I still have my Dreamcast and tons of games, but the console has the reset problem and there's not one game I ever want to go through again. That doesn't mean they're bad games, they're not. They're brillant. But the sheer thought of playing through Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi or Jet Set Radio triggers nothing but indifference.

Maybe I can catch up some of the games I missed back then, but it weren't many.

Why all this kerfuffle over the PS3's backwards compatibility (or lack of) with PS2 games? Just play all your old PS2 games on your old PS2. Simple.

edshot's picture

You're right. I could never understand all this need for backwards compatability. Ok, a few extra leads, but so what? the PS2 slim takes up no space at all and you can pick a second-hand one up for about 30 quid.

Besides, I love all that faffing about and sifting through memory cards - I have to do it for my Gamecube, N64 and go on a DS hunt behind the sofa occasionally, it's what give it character, lol!

I have PS1 dlc on my PS3 and yes it's VERY handy - but it strangely takes something away......maybe I'm just old fashioned.

- Infinite memory cards.
- Better performance when using software emulation.
- Better controller.
- Convenience.

Some people don't have a PS2 but they do have a PS3. There are improvements the original PS3 provides over a ps2 when playing PS2 titles. You also don't have to switch consoles and tv inputs or stereo cables to change games. You can also create virtual memory cards as opposed to keeping up with physical ones.

There is no why this can be true, for one, sony havnt got there act together this generation and done any form of exclusivity with any game producers/developers. If this is real, it is very good news for PS3 owners

Jack_'s picture

Why would timed exclusives be good for PS3 owners?

christus11's picture

Well it would give us something to be proud of, and it shows sony commitment to getting content onto the PSN

Jack_'s picture

What's there to be proud of? That we can play something other people can't?

Jack_'s picture

Just let us install pcsx2 on the PS3 already.

Mancubus's picture

This must be the bravest move in videogame-history for a long time. Bringing out a new console, that plays all the old games from its predecessor, realizing that it's a waste of revenues, then stripping it from the third iteration of the console and after two years releasing all the PS2-games that were originally playable on the console in the PlayStation Store (and probably bill them for 9,99€) Brillant.

Not that I cared so much about my old PS2-stuff, because I can still play it on PS2 or even on my PS3, but it feels so utterly ballsy from Sony. :)

StealthBadger's picture

So it will have ps2 emulation for downloads only? Or will I be able to play my old PS2 games. From the way it's written, it looks like downloads only.. Ho-humm.

Poffle's picture

I was only wishing for this the other day. The Dreamcast games part that is. If true, upscale them to 720p and also make them playable on the PSP. PSP has the exact button layout as the Dreamcast pad so would be a perfect fit.

4thVariety's picture

No last generation game is worth $40 on its own. The competition and used sales THIS generation are too competitive for that. $20 bucks at best, even then it has to be a really good game. Still, most people would be able to cover all their PS2 needs by just buying a used one and being cheaper off at the same time.

It also looks a bit helpless if they need to call a Walmart exec to ask what to bundle. Shouldn't Sony know their customers better?

Good thing they also did not say when Sony expects to have sold five million of their waggle attachment.

Duncan_Stewart's picture

This is all great news regarding emulation, etc but is yet another example of Sony having hopeless press embargoes! Seeing as some of this is marked confidential I imagine Sony aren't overly impressed with it being leaked, or maybe these leaks are some sort of master plan from Sony to build hype? Either way, downloadable DC and Japanese PS3 games would be excellent if it comes off. I'd prefer a localised version of Yakuza 3 though.
