Sony has confirmed that a demo edition of Guerrilla Games’ Killzone 2 will be available on PSN before the full game officially launches.

SCEE has confirmed that the demo will be available to European PS3 owners, while Americans eager to sample the FPS will have to pre-order the full game GameStop to get access.

Commencing February 3, GameStop will hand out demo download codes to customers in return for their pre-order deposit. Access to the Killzone 2 demo will remain this way until the title's official US release on Feb 27, afterwhich it'll be free to all.

And while SCEE couldn’t provide precise details on the demo’s release date in the UK, a spokesperson told news site VideoGamer that it will be released in Europe in a “normal manner”.

Killzone 2, the fourth game developed by Guerrilla Games, was featured in today’s article on the most promising PS3 games of 2009.

Man‚ I can’t believe how many foolish comments there are regarding the KZ2 demo. The demo will be available to download for free when the game is released. Where was the early release of the Gears of War 2 demo? Dowload the free demo when it's available and make your decision to purchase the game afterwards. I will be enjoying my demo early and giving my xbox 360 a well deserved break. Don’t hate it till you've tryed it. You never know, it just may be better than Gears of War or COD4.

Good for UK that you get a real demo. Sony US apparently doesn't understand the concept of a demo. Either that or they're desperate enough to substitute long-term benefit for short-term gain by accepting Gamestops financial incentive.

Demo's are part of marketing the game - raising awareness and getting people to sample and want more. There's no benefit in providing a demo to someone who's already decided to buy it!

MS understands this by mandating demo's on all Arcade games (even user created XNA games) and have the most demo's available for download of any system. Meanwhile, Sony America is still trying to understand this thing called the internet and how people sometimes use it to try a game and then buy it. No wonder they lost so much market share this gen.

sony wants ps3 owners to buy the game first in order to get the demo?

i don't even have the strength to properly convey my disapproval. talk about ass-backwards stupidity. if i were M$, i'd be having a field day with this.

it's bad enough that sales of the console are receding, they reward those who've already purchased one by charging them for a demo? bravo, sony.

That seems a little silly. Shouldn't the demo be something to convince folks to buy the game? If you have to already decide to buy it before you get the demo, it's kind of defeating the purpose. And encouraging sales at Gamestop? That'll help the industry... Especially when people drop off a few trade-ins and purchase a few used games on their way to pre-order and get a Killzone 2 demo code.

This is a game I personally have no interest in, but I would download a try a demo, potentially netting a sale where they would not normally be one if, by some chance, I decide I like the game. But if there's no demo, and since I don't rent games on principle, I'll never try it, and I'll definitely never buy it.

Sorry, Guerrilla.

It'll go on to sell millions, regardless of your actions.

I agree, in terms of advertising the game, this move is about as fail as it gets. I guess by the time non-preordering folks get the demo, they can pick up some used copies of Killzone; at Gamestop.
