Sony’s Gran Turismo franchise hit 55.45 million unit sales in December 2009, according to developer Polyphony Digital.
The PlayStation series debuted in Japan in December 2007, and the following year in Europe and North America.
2001's Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec (pictured) is the bestselling title in the series, having sold 14.89 million copies.
Lifetime franchise sales data also shows that the most recent release, Gran Turismo PSP, has reached 1.8 million sales.
Gran Turismo 5 was scheduled to launch for PS3 this March but was recently delayed to an unspecified date, with publisher Sony citing production-related matters.
I read the headline and thought that was the figure for downpayments on GT5 - the demo was shit so what have they been doing all this time?
Oh how I wish they'd finish GT5....
Debuted in 2007?? 1997 I thinkie ;)
Impressive numbers no doubt. Looks like the GT franchise is still very much alive and kicking (ass apparently)
4.65 million sales of gt5 prologue! For a glorified demo, that's astounding. I guess maybe polyphony isn't losing Sony as much money as speculation suggested.
Also, 1.8 million on the PSP version which wasn't exactly widely acclaimed, and is on the PSP seems very impressive.
