A Scottish MP has called for an end to the negative perceptions that videogames often attract.
Speaking yesterday at a Scottish Parliament Members’ Debate, Gavin Brown, Conservative MP for Lothians, said that we “must ensure that a positive perception of games is promoted, instead of the negative perception that some games might have attracted.”
Brown was speaking in a debate which focused on the issue of tax breaks for the UK development sector, an initiative which the Labour Government has been repeatedly criticised for avoiding.
“Gaming is extremely popular,” Brown added, “but only 3 percent of games sold have a mature or 18 rating. It is important for us to emphasise the positive aspects of gaming.”
Brown also claimed that more than 50 percent of games are suitable for the under-7s.
How refreshing to read that someone with a voice is using their power to represent the normal view of the gaming pastime, rather than the sensationalist hyperbole spewed out by other MP's that has usually been gleaned from bandwagon jumping tabloids on a slow news day.
Realigning the established understanding of actual content of the games medium, rather than relying on the extremely small minority, is something that desperately needed to be addressed. Perhaps now our elected representatives will get on with the business of acting responsibly instead of tarring and feathering the entire spectrum of video games based on the 3% 18+ rated games (And that will be the day that scientists develop hell resistant snowballs!).
Updated headline for sake of clarity. Apologies.
Just because only 3% of games are rated "M" (which I find hard to believe) that doesn't mean that other games (rated "T" or lower) wouldn't appeal to someone over the age of 18. There have been plenty of games that I've played from start to finish that didn't have a "mature" rating.
He's referring to the UK, so games with a BBFC rated 18. In any case, I don't see what you enjoying a game has to do with his point.
probably a lot more than 3%...
In light of this, I wonder what percentage of gamers is adult.
It's probably a lot higher but the thing is most adults playing games probably would rather have sports games, brain training games, etc and it's more likely to be teens that want Gears of war, Halo, etc.
That's why the DS does so well with adults but has little to no M rated games.
